This is a collection of some of my work under the role of Game Art Intern with the indie game developer, AfroDuck Studios. My main role was in 2d and 3d environmental asset creation and the reworking of enemy sprites for their 2.5D Action-Adventure RPG, Zakumba: Astraia.

My largest task on the project was to redesign and reanimate the enemy called the Worker Golem. The team's vision for the redesign was to make the Worker Golem feel heavier, more ancient and durable, and to polish its concept. With this information, I refined the shape language of the character, the color palette in order to inform a different kind of materiality, and enhanced lore specific elements of it. For instance, the Worker Golem is powered by a magical core, so I added an opening on its back to make the glowing core occasionally visible.

The props I created while on the project were designed to populate one of the first locations of the game: an abandoned ancient factory that dealt with a strange forgotten crystal technology. Zakumba: Astraia is designed based on past West African civilizations and is more specifically focused on Ghana. A large portion of my 2D prop creation was resourcing reference material to maintain the West African influence while also giving a recognizable, industrial feel. For instance, with the fireproof jackets hanging on the wall and crumbled on the ground, I added the colors and striping of kente cloth: green (for good health, the purpose of a protective garment) and gold (for wealth/prosperity, a connection to the factory's intents). The shape of the coat is based off ancient garments, but is then updated to feel like a fire-retardant material. The hooks the coat hangs on themselves are designed in the stye of various ancient Ghanaian artifacts.
